If any of you lack wisdom

If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.

James 1:5

‘If any of you lack wisdom…’

It seems such a strange thing to say, because all of us lack some kind of wisdom. It’s very generalised and is meant to be implemented that way, across our whole life.

Two ways we can use it with a more definite approach is (i) before we pray, and (ii) before we speak.

(i) Sometimes, we may find ourselves praying silly prayers which are ill-thought out due to rushing or not knowing the full issue and therefore what to pray for . To turn that around, we can firstly rest, then pray for wisdom regarding how and what to pray, then steady ourselves and pray an intelligent prayer with the wisdom God gives us for that moment.

(ii) What flows from our mouth can often have a very positive effect…if we are wise in what we say and how we say it. That is, asking for wisdom before we speak, then waiting on that still, small voice which seems to whisper in our mind, “say this,…..….”  If we can then use that wisdom with words, those words can engender healing or straightening to a wounded or misguided heart.
